DTF (Direct to Film) printing

DTF printing is a versatile and durable garment printing method that allows for full-colour designs on nearly any fabric. Unlike sublimation, DTF works on cotton, blends, and even dark garments — making it a go-to option for a wide range of products.

The DTF process

Design Creation

Your design is created digitally and prepared for print using specialist software that mirrors the image and applies a white underbase.

Print to Film

The design is printed in full colour onto a clear PET transfer film using DTF inks, including a layer of white ink.

Adhesive Powder Application

A fine hot-melt powder adhesive is applied to the wet ink on the film and cured with heat.

Heat Press Transfer

The film is placed on the garment and heat-pressed, bonding the design to the fabric. The film is peeled away, and the design is sealed with a final heat press for durability.

Your DTF Questions Answered

What fabrics can DTF print on?
DTF works on cotton, polyester, blends, canvas, and more — light or dark colours. It’s one of the most versatile print methods for garments.
Is DTF better than vinyl or screen printing?
DTF offers more detail, colour, and flexibility than vinyl, and it’s more cost-effective for small runs compared to screen printing. It’s ideal for complex designs, gradients, and short runs.
How durable is DTF?
Very durable. DTF prints are stretch-resistant, long-lasting, and can handle 40–50 washes without fading, cracking, or peeling.
Can DTF print on dark colours?
Yes. DTF includes a white ink layer, which makes it perfect for printing vibrant designs on dark fabrics.
Is DTF good for small orders?
Absolutely. Since there's no setup like screen printing, DTF is ideal for one-off items, short runs, or personalised orders without extra cost.
When should I choose DTF?
Choose DTF if you need full-colour prints on any fabric, especially cotton or dark garments. It's perfect for promotional wear, custom t-shirts, workwear, and personalised apparel.
